Last term, our boys took their skills to new heights with an exciting project centred around 3D design and photogrammetry. With the guidance of staff, they delved into the world of 3D modelling using cutting-edge tools. Undoubtedly the highlight of the project was scanning the heads of staff and pupils to create lifelike 3D models.
The project began with an introduction to photogrammetry, a technique that uses photography to measure and recreate real-world objects in three dimensions. Our students quickly embraced this technology, learning how to capture multiple angles of a subject to generate detailed 3D models.
Using Tinkercad, they designed and manipulated their 3D models. Tinkercad’s user-friendly interface made it easy for everyone to experiment with different designs, enhancing their understanding of spatial relationships and geometric concepts. Integrating photogrammetry with Tinkercad allowed the students to merge creativity with technical skills, producing impressive results.
Inspired by the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout, they incorporated elements from the popular game into their designs. This theme provided a rich context for creativity, encouraging them to think critically about character design, storytelling and environmental aesthetics. By recreating familiar faces of their peers and teachers, they added a personal touch to their projects.
The 3D design project was a remarkable journey for all involved, yielding a number of learning outcomes:
– Technical proficiency: the boys gained hands-on experience with photogrammetry and 3D design software, enhancing their technical skills and preparing them for future technological endeavours.
– Creative expression: the project provided a platform for them to express their creativity, allowing them to explore and develop their artistic abilities within a structured framework.
– Collaborative learning: working together on a shared project fostered a sense of community and collaboration, the boys learning to communicate effectively, share ideas and solve problems collectively.
– Critical thinking: the complexity of 3D modelling required them to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving. They learned to troubleshoot issues and refine their designs to achieve the desired outcome.
– Personal growth: by scanning and modelling their peers and teachers, they developed a deeper appreciation for the nuances of human features and the importance of attention to detail. This aspect of the project also promoted empathy and respect for others.
The 3D design and photogrammetry project was a resounding success, showcasing the talent and enthusiasm of our students. The skills they have acquired and the experiences they have shared will undoubtedly inspire future projects and innovations. We’re immensely proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing where their newfound expertise will take them.
